The Salty Opens in Coconut Grove and an incident at Sea
Plus Kush Wynwood is closing for renovations, a last call for Latin House, and
Hello — I’m back on land after spending seven nights aboard the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam. The ship was beautiful, the food was excellent (especially Morimoto and the Pinnacle Grill), and my stateroom was fantastic — there’s nothing better than keeping your curtains open and waking up to the sun rising over the ocean.
By now, you’ve probably heard of the incident that occurred on my ship — two of the crew were killed in an engineering room incident. I won’t ever forget the ship’s Captain’s voice breaking as he announced the tragedy over the PA system. I wrote something for Broken Palate and the story was picked up by various national and local news teams. I spent yesterday speaking with various reporters, including ABC and NBC. Even the NY Post sourced my eyewitness account. I will give a full review of the ship and its ports at a later date. For now, just wrapping my head around what happened. Tragic!
The Salty Donut Opens in Coconut Grove
Miami’s OG gourmet doughnut shop, the Salty Donut, opened its Coconut Grove shop this past weekend. The shop is open until 10 p.m. daily, in case you have some after-dinner cravings. In addition to doughnuts, coffee, and merch, nostalgia fans need to try the homemade cherry pie pop tart, filled with crushed cherry compote, tart cherry glaze, and topped with white chocolate cookie crumble. Donut miss out!

Kush Wynwood is Closing for Repairs
On April 1, Kush Wynwood will close for renovations — and an upgrade. When it opens, expect additions like a retail space and a hidden cocktail bar. When Kush opened back in 2014, the spot was located on the far reaches of Wynwood, right at the very corner. Since then, the neighborhood has grown and thrived, yet Kush remained a simple little place to get a fantastic burger and a cold draft beer. At the time, Kush was only the second restaurant for Kuscher (Lokal in Coconut Grove was the original). Now, the restaurateur has his own Miami empire.
While the renovations are taking place, a food truck will be parked at the location, serving up Kush bites (and there’s always ordering via Uber Eats and DoorDash). Expanding!

Last Call for Latin House Grill
Back in 2012, Michell Sanchez was one of the original Miami food truck owners, rolling his Latin House to food truck events throughout the city. Sanchez, along with other food truck OGs like Richard Hales, David Garcia, Brett Chiavari, and Derek Kapman, used his food truck as an incubator. After testing the waters and perfecting the recipe for his burgers, Sanchez opened Latin House Grill as a brick-and-mortar in 2014.
A decade later, Latin House announced its closing. The restaurant will close on Sunday, May 5 so there’s time for a last meal or two! Mad love!

Lawson is Pool Ready
If you have a pool, you’ve probably had a bunch of friends self-invite themselves for a splash and a few beers. Well, if your friends are driving you nuts, but you still don’t want to float alone, then why not adopt Lawson! By the pictures, he’s ready to dive in right now! Lawson is a mere pup at two years old — best of all, he won’t drink all your beer! Lawson’s kennel number is A2451700 and he’s in kennel number H01 — he’s being fostered, but is still looking for a forever pool home. Make a splash!
Batch Gastropub is the sponsor of our dog adoption section. If you adopt one of these guys (or any dog because of Miami Checklist), Batch will supply you with a gift card for the amount of the adoption from MDAS. So get a dog, get a burger…or something like that. Contact me for details.
Lawson is one of hundreds of dogs available at Miami-Dade Animal Services. If you’re looking to bring a new best friend into the family, this is the place to start your search. Adoptions are only done in person, and you should bring a current picture ID and proof of current address. Dogs older than four months carry a $65 adoption fee and puppies are $85 — all dogs come home fully vaccinated, are dewormed, and have been spayed/neutered. In other words, adopting a dog is the best deal in Miami.
