A Sexy Fish Tip
I’ve been to Sexy Fish a few times, even calling it the best place to go when someone else is paying at a former newspaper that I wrote for once upon a time.
I always really enjoy myself and get shocked by the excellent quality of the food, the million-dollar Ariel-on-Molly vibe, and the attentive service. But, I’m not the biggest fan of the “see and be seen” crowd, the velvet ropes, and the loud music that I’ve experienced during my nighttime dinners.
If you’re like me and want the food and the mermaid-goes-to-Tulum vibes, here’s a pro tip — GO EARLY!
I know I know (gasp), eating before 9 p.m. in Miami is weird. Hey - I get you all — I eat dinner at home at 9:30 usually. But I had a 6 p.m. reservation last week and let me tell you my experience was completely different.
The service was completely attentive, the somm thoughtful, and the food excellent. You simply cannot beat Sexy Fish for presentation from the tiny brass fish with red lips to rest your chopsticks on to the same little fish presented in chocolate form at the end of the meal and everything in between.
Best of all? You’ll have an easy time snagging a table and you can have the bathroom all to yourself for all the selfies you want. And, if the stigma of eating dinner at 6 p.m. is too much for you, simply call it a late lunch. Everyone will be impressed! The Early Bird Gets the Sushi!

Ann Storck Center’s Celebrity Chefs Event is Tonight
One of my favorite annual events is the Ann Storck Center’s Celebrity Chefs event which features dozens of South Florida’s best chefs offering fantastic bites, free-flowing drinks, a silent auction, entertainment, and other surprises.
What’s really special is that evening is a fundraiser for the Ann Storck Center, which helps children and adults with developmental disabilities. The Center helps nearly 100 residents and more than 300 day clients, serving them nutritious food, providing life skills, and even having them participate in a puppy parade!
The event is tonight from 6 - 10 p.m. at the Hard Rock and tickets cost $150 — which is basically the cost of dinner and a few drinks. Tickets are still available (click here to purchase) and if you go, we can toast to a good cause — look for me there! Fun with a focus!
Raise a glass and help your community tonight from 6 - 10 p.m. at Hard Rock Casino Ballroom in Hollywood; Tickets cost $150 at annstorckcenter.networkforgood,com.
Vegan Block Party
Lately I’ve been reassessing my relationship with how I eat — especially meat. I’m not sure if I will refrain from eating all meat to become a vegetarian or vegan, but I do prefer a mostly plant-based diet. Let’s face it, if you put a big bowl of pasta primavera and a steak in front of me, I’m going for the pasta every single time. Going vegan is easier than ever, thanks to chefs who are being uber creative with vegetables and meatless options.
If you want to try out some great vegan food — or you simply want to enjoy a day out in Fort Lauderdale, come out to Vegan Block Party tomorrow where you can eat from more than 70 vendors and food trucks, enjoy drinks from a fully vegan bar, enjoy music, contests, giveaway, and kids activities. Max Santiago’s Max’d Out Donuts will be there. He leaked his menu and it sounds amazing: apple fritters, a mango tajin doughnut, a vegan glazed doughnut, a red velvet gluten-free cake, and a BBQ pulled “pork” brioche using jackfruit and mushrooms. Veg Out!
Get your veg on from 2 - 8 p.m. at Esplanade Park in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $10 (food and drinks are pay-as-you-go); veganblockparty.com.
Six Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Pet
Next Tuesday, April 30th is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. In honor of that day, I’d like to post six reasons to adopt a shelter pet, courtesy of Humane Society of Broward County:
They are truly one-of-a-kind pets!
They will always remember that you saved them.
If you adopt an adult pet, you know exactly what you're getting size-wise, and some pets even come with training!
You help with the pet over-population problem.
By adopting instead of purchasing a dog, you are doing your part to not support puppy mills.
You are saving two pets with each adoption - first is the one you adopt and second is the one you make room for at the shelter.
If you want a pocket cutie pie, consider Marley — he’s a 13-pound, 2-year-old dachshund mix and is waiting for you at the Humane Society of Broward County. His kennel number is A670706. Marley and Me!
Batch Gastropub is the sponsor of our dog adoption section. If you adopt one of these guys (or any dog because of the Miami Checklist), Batch will supply you with a gift card for the amount of the adoption fee. So get a dog, get a burger…or something like that. Contact me for details.
Marley is one of hundreds of dogs available at the Humane Society of Broward County; 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale. Adoptions open at 11am. Call 954-989-3977 ext. 6 with any questions or visit humanebroward.com.
