National Dog Day Afternoon
Today is National Dog Day — a celebration of our fur babies that make our lives whole.
If you’re looking to take your good boy or girl out on the town, the Kimpton Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale Beach is hosting a sunset yappy hour, starting at 6 p.m. today, August 26. The resort’s rooftop bar, Escape, offers sunset views of Fort Lauderdale, along with cozy places for you and your furry friend to lounge (with plenty of photo opportunities). Humans will enjoy $14 Tito’s vodka cocktails including the Hair of the Dog, Mutt Mule, Bark-a-Rita, Daily Walk, and All-Time Furr-avorite. A portion of proceeds from cocktail sales will benefit Abandoned Pet Rescue, a local non-profit dedicated to rescuing and sheltering abandoned and abused pets, and helping them find forever homes. Pups will enjoy goodie bags, treat samples, and more surprises from Tito’s Vodka and the Green Paws Pet Market.
I was at the Escape rooftop bar with my Luna this past weekend, and I can attest that this is one amazing place for pooches! Barktacular!

Torno Subito Miami Opens
Torno Subito Miami, a restaurant by Massimo Bottura, opened on the roof of the Julia & Henry Food Hall.
The opening comes with much excitement for Bottura to open a restaurant in Miami. The chef, considered one of the greatest in the world, is best known for his Three-Michelin-Starred restaurant, Osteria Francescana.
So, is Torno Subito worth the hype? Well, yes….and no. The restaurant offers a $165 tasting menu that, while delicious, is frankly too rich for my salary. And the restaurant, a technicolor homage to kitschy Italian movies of the 60s and 70s, seems too….casual for a long tasting dinner (although if someone invites you just jump at the chance).
But, if you want to experience this restaurant (and you should), then take advantage of the amazing pastas, along with pizzas that come from a beautiful yellow Italian wood-burning oven. I would sit at the bar (indoor/outdoor so take your pick) and have a spritz and a pizza. For me, the tortellini — tiny little pockets of pasta filled with beef and pork, hand made daily by a 75-year-old woman — is the star of the show. Go for that and you will not be disappointed. Dolce!

This is one Delicious Hot Pocket
I have no words why this delicious one-year-old Frenchie is at MDAS. I do know that all of you people who want a Frenchie should not be spending thousands of dollars on this breed. Sure, they’re adorable (my Luna is gorgeous), they’re smart, and they’re amazing. They also have health issues, they are stubborn, forget about any long walks on the beach with your dog, and they will fart-bomb your house.
If you still want a Frenchie — go adopt one. For all the reasons I mentioned above, people are surrendering their Frenchies. MDAS has three Frenchies right now, but here’s Hot Pocket. His number is A2618621 and he’s currently in receiving (so go get him before he goes into the system). He’s also available to foster in case you want to test a Frenchie.
Batch Gastropub is the sponsor of our dog adoption section. If you adopt one of these guys (or any dog because of Miami Checklist), Batch will supply you with a gift card for the amount of the adoption from MDAS. So get a dog, get a burger…or something like that. Contact me for details.
Hot Pocket is one of the hundreds of dogs available at Miami-Dade Animal Services. If you’re looking to bring a new best friend into the family, this is the place to start your search. Adoptions are only done in person, and you should bring a current picture ID and proof of current address. Dogs older than four months carry a $65 adoption fee and puppies are $85 — all dogs come home fully vaccinated, are dewormed, and have been spayed/neutered. In other words, adopting a dog is the best deal in Miami. Hawty Shawty!
