Hello From The High Seas
Plus more Fooq's info, a global passport of food, and Adena is your beach babe.
Ahoy mateys — I’m currently sailing on the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam. Currently the ship is about to dock in Old San Juan, where I intend to visit my pigeon friends at Parque de las Palomas and enjoy a few cocktails at La Factoria. (Won’t you buy me a cocktail by subscribing to Miami Checklist below?)
I know many of you have been sharing pictures of the Icon of the Seas and its massive shopping mall qualities. Let me say that this ship has no water slides, no bumper cars, no shopping mall, and no giant LED screens. Instead, it has teak decks, marvelous views of the ocean, very good food, and friendly, welcoming people — both guests and crew. There’s something romantic about the old-world charm: fresh flowers, calming music, and plenty of fresh air (and a very good smoked Old Fashioned). After all the LOUDNESS of South Florida, this is the most welcoming journey I can fathom right now. Highly Recommended!

More Info on the Return of Fooq’s
A few weeks ago, I broke the news that Fooq’s would reopen in Miami’s Upper East Side. Here are the details: The restaurant will reopen at a 9,000 square foot building, located at 150 NW 73rd Street. The new space will be designed by Joyn Studio and the menu will offer favorites like charcoal-grilled kebabs, Persian stews, and other globally-inspired dishes. Fooq’s will also offer a full cocktail menu. The restaurant will open late 2024 for lunch, brunch, and dinner seven days a week. Welcome Back!
Aldena is the Beach Babe of Your Dreams
Today is the first day of Spring, meaning summer is right around the corner. You’re going to want a beach and pool buddy and Aldena is the beach babe of your dreams. Aldena is a black and white terrier who can’t wait to hang poolside with you. Her number is A233835 and her kennel number is WW30. Beachy Keen!
Batch Gastropub is the sponsor of our dog adoption section. If you adopt one of these guys (or any dog because of Miami Checklist), Batch will supply you with a gift card for the amount of the adoption from MDAS. So get a dog, get a burger…or something like that. Contact me for details.
Aldena is one of hundreds of dogs available at Miami-Dade Animal Services. If you’re looking to bring a new best friend into the family, this is the place to start your search. Adoptions are only done in person, and you should bring a current picture ID and proof of current address. Dogs older than four months carry a $65 adoption fee and puppies are $85 — all dogs come home fully vaccinated, are dewormed, and have been spayed/neutered. In other words, adopting a dog is the best deal in Miami.
Get Aldena at Miami-Dade Animal Services. 3599 NW 79 Ave., Doral; 305-884-1101; miamidade.gov/animals
