Hamilton Returns to Miami and National Espresso Martini Day Deals
Plus, Pie for Pi Day, St. Patrick's Day Deals, and Lucky Charms is Magically Delicious
If you know me, there’s only one thing I love more than dogs — and it’s HAMILTON!
I’ve seen this ground-breaking piece of theater about 15 times (and I’m returning tonight). I even have a Hamilton-related tattoo on my shoulder — if that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is.
Why do I love Hamilton? It’s exhilarating, heart-pounding, entertaining, and heartbreaking. I’ve taken non-theater lovers who now text me about other shows they’ve gone to see. It’s that transformative and powerful. It’s basically the gateway drug to the addiction that is musical theater.
I’ve seen Hamilton on Broadway, in London, in Puerto Rico, Chicago, and here in Florida. If you want to get on that Hamilton bandwagon (and you should), it has returned to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts now through March 24.
If you think theater tickets are beyond your means, then why not sign up for the Ham lottery at luckyseat.com? Rise up!

National Espresso Martini Day
I hate fake holidays, but every once in a while there’s one that I can get behind — like National Espresso Martini Day.
If you want to learn the history behind the cocktail, check out the story I wrote for Broken Palate, which also covers the very real “Espresso Martini Effect”.
Now that I whet your appetite, head over to Kush Brickell to get BOGO espresso martinis all day Friday, March 15.
Or, stop by everyone’s favorite dark bar, Fox’s Lounge (or its sibling, Lost Boy Dry Goods) for ten-dollar espresso martinis all day long. Cheers!
Pies for Pi Day at Fireman Derek
Every year, Fireman Derek celebrates Pi Day with pie. Yes, it’s a pun — but there’s nothing punny about a slice of FD’s key lime pie for $3.14. The offer is good today only (3/14) at all three locations. You have plenty of time to get thee to the pieman for some sweet/tart goodness. Pi oh my!
Get sliced at all three Fireman Derek’s locations; firemandereks.com.
St. Patrick’s Day at John Martin’s Irish Pub
St. Patrick’s Day is the one time of year where you can wear green, pinch strangers, and drink green beer without being thrown out of your local tavern. The problem with St. Patrick’s Day in Miami is that there are few real Irish celebrations.
Here’s my annual pet peeve about St. Patrick’s Day — if you have a sushi restaurant and decide to call your Midori martini the “Luck ‘O the Irish” to capitalize on the holiday shame on you!!!! If you’re slapping corned beef on a burger for one day, still no cigar. Note to PR peeps — please don’t encourage this bad behavior.
Want to go to a real Irish celebration on St. Patrick’s Day? You’d best head to John Martin’s Irish Pub in Coral Gables for its two-day street festival. On Saturday, March 16, the festivities run from 2 p.m. to midnight, and Sunday, March 17, party from noon to 9 p.m. There will be live bands (including the most excellent US-2U tribute band), food, games, and plenty of beer. Plus, buy a shot of Tullamore D.E.W. (a fine Irish whiskey) and you’ll drink Harp all day long!
All these shenanigans benefit the L’il Abner foundation! Slainte!
Get lucky this Saturday and Sunday at John Martin’s; 253 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables; johnmartinsmiami.com.
This Lucky Charm is Magically Delicious
I swear, I did not change this cutie’s name to suit the weekend, but would you blame me if I did? Lucky Charms is a gorgeous 6-year-old white and brown American Bulldog mix who needs a home. This girl will be in the shelter system for two years come April and that is a shame. Can someone step up and give this Lucky Charm a forever home? Her number is A2384315 and she’s a foster right now (but needs a forever home). Magically delicious!
Batch Gastropub is the sponsor of our dog adoption section. If you adopt one of these guys (or any dog because of Miami Checklist), Batch will supply you with a gift card for the amount of the adoption from MDAS. So get a dog, get a burger…or something like that. Contact me for details.
Lucky Charms is one of hundreds of dogs available at Miami-Dade Animal Services. If you’re looking to bring a new best friend into the family, this is the place to start your search. Adoptions are only done in person, and you should bring a current picture ID and proof of current address. Dogs older than four months carry a $65 adoption fee and puppies are $85 — all dogs come home fully vaccinated, are dewormed, and have been spayed/neutered. In other words, adopting a dog is the best deal in Miami. La La La!
