Osteria — Great Pasta, Better Branzino
Someone asked me recently what my favorite food is. And, hands down there is no hesitation. If I were led to my own devices I would eat pasta every single day of my life. For me, there is nothing like a bowl of steaming pasta to feed every one of my senses, including my soul.
And, while there are plenty of fantastic places scattered all over the Miami-Dade map, I recently rediscovered Osteria.
Located in the former Paulie Gee’s (and before that China Palace) space, Osteria opened about two years ago in the still-unloved area that is Biscayne Boulevard just north of the MiMo District. While there are some very good restaurants along this strip, the neighborhood still feels somewhat rugged, as evidenced by the three police cars — sirens wailing and lights blazing — passing me as I parked my car.
Honestly, I likely wouldn’t have thought to go to Osteria, but my date — in for a meeting from out of town and staying in Coral Gables — chose a restaurant randomly that was smack dab in the middle of our locations. When he suggested it, my first thought was to suggest another place in the area but I decided to not be difficult for once in my life and to go with his suggestion. I’m glad I did.
Once you enter the restaurant you’re greeted by a charming scene of candlelight and black and white photos. A server with a chalkboard offered the specials, of which there was an enticing cacio e pepe with truffles. I chose the bucatini ai porcini, while my date ordered the branzino.
The bucatini was served perfectly al dente and was loaded with mushrooms in a fragrant sage sauce. My date’s fish dish, though not pasta, was outstanding. His branzino was presented whole, baked in a salt crust. A server worked skillfully to debone and filet the sea creature, making sure that not one tiny sharp object was left in the white, tender flesh. I tried the fish and was instantly envious — lemony, moist (yes, I hate that word, too but it applies here), and oh-so-flavorful.
Oh, and the date? Let’s just say I was surprised by the entire evening in a good way.
This little bistro has been added to my short list of places to go. Che buono!

Visit Your Local Brewery Today
Last week, we all received the devastating news that Wynwood Brewing Company would be shuttering its taproom after service on January 4. Wynwood’s core beers will be produced and sold from Veza Sur afterward.
If you don’t want this to happen to your favorite brewery, go out and visit. Grab a friend, grab a dog, and grab a beer. In my neighborhood, I make it a point to visit my local breweries, LauderAle and Three Sons, as often as I can. Breweries offer convivial settings and good beer universally - whether you like a sour, an IPA, or a lager there’s a brewery in the Miami area for you. Plus, most Miami breweries are owned and operated independently and they need your help to stay afloat.
In future editions of Miami Checklist, I will highlight some of my favorite breweries, along with what makes them special.
I hope to see you all this weekend at Wynwood for a beer. Cheers!
