305 Day
The original idea behind 305 Day was simple: Celebrate the “305” on 3/05 at 3:05 (P.M., not A.M., though in Miami that would work too, come to think of it). with a cafecito.
Credit Miami PR executive, JennyLee Molina for the idea and the subsequent growth of 305 Day into a “thing” that’s celebrated with food and drink specials much like St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated with Shamrock Shakes and green beer.
Honestly? That’s cool with me — I mean, any reason to get food and drink specials works, though I’m kicking myself in the butt for not getting a Manhattan in Manhattan on February 12 at 2:12 P.M. Here are some ways to celebrate 305 Day tomorrow:
One of my favorite spots to get beer, Boxelder, is offering ice-cold brewskis for $3.05 tomorrow at Julia & Henry’s in Downtown Miami.
While you’re there, chef Jose Mendin is offering a glass of his new Veranda wine with the purchase of a burger at his June Burgers from 5 to 8 p.m. — also at Julia & Henry’s.
Speaking of $3.05, Maman in Wynwood is offering pastries and cookies for $3.05 from 3 to 5 p.m. Notice a theme, here?
In keeping with that theme, the Frost Museum of Science will serve a $3.05 menu of mini Cubanos and croquetas.
If you’re a traditionalist, La Boulangerie Boul'Mich will give you a non-Cuban latte free with the purchase of ten bucks or more of food.
If mashups are your thing, check out the croquetaco — basically what happens when a croqueta and a taco have a baby. This love child between Islas Canarias and Coyo Taco is available at all Coyo Taco locations for $11.
Head to Versailles tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. for the official Ventanita launch day with Havana Club Rum cocktails by Gio Gutierrez. This party celebrates the book, Ventanitas: A Window into Miami’s Coffee Culture by O, Miami. RSVP here.
Finally — if you simply want to go “old school”, CAO Bakery’s Coral Way location (7830 Coral Wy, Miami ONLY) will give away free coladas all day, along with t-shirts. 305 Til’ You Die!
A Sexy Sunday Brunch
I love Sexy Fish for its over-the-top flash, glitz, and mermaid-takes-too-many-edibles theme. And I am certain I will love it more during brunch because the only thing better than a dinner under the sea is day drinking under the sea!
If you’re like me, get your fins together for the Secy Sunday brunch at Sext Fish starting this Sunday, March 10. The entire brunch sounds as if Stefan from SNL dreamed it up: James Bond in the men’s room, mermaids in the ladies room, DJ spinning, a sushi station, unlimited starters, a main and doughnuts, mochi, and ice cream for dessert.
The brunch includes appetizers, one main, dessert, and drinks and ranges from $99 for the N/A package (that’s no fun) to $129 for unlimited Charles Le Bel - Inspiration “1818” N.V, $149 for unlimited Louis Roederer - Collection 244 N.V., or $349 for unlimited Dom Pérignon 2013 — I’m shooting for the Louis Roederer — mainly because I have an insane crush on the French man who took me on a tour of the wine caves in Reims. Fins Up!
Champers and mermaids from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays at 1001 South Miami Avenue, Miami; 305-889-7888; sexyfishmiami.com.
Fooq’s is Reopening in Little River
When Fooq’s closed in 2021, transforming itself into Eleventh Street Pizza, owner David Foulquier pledged to reopen his small, beloved restaurant that offered an eclectic “International” menu. In a city that sometimes feels like your dining choices range from sushi to Tulum-inspired, Fooq’s is truly missed.
Well, it’s time for some hope, because Foulquier is planning to open a standalone Fooq’s in Little River. When I asked him about it, he said it was still a ways off — but an Instagram story on FooqsMiami shows a construction site with poured concrete and outer walls being finished!
Bonita Linda
I know at least one constant reader of Miami Checklist that will get their heartstrings tugged at the sight of a pretty fawn-colored Chihuahua named (appropriately) Linda. Linda is a 13-year-old tan and white Chihuahua and I can only guess that her owners traded her in for a newer model like you would a Hyundai. How do I know this? I personally adopted a nine-year-old Chihuahua that was “traded in” — so it happens people. It happens. If you prefer “vintage” to “new” then Linda is your girl. And, if you’re concerned that a 13 year-old Chihuahua might not have as much “pep in their step”, my 15-year-old Chihuahua, Dora, says, “Hold my kibble”. Linda’s number is A1331783 and she’s right now in receiving. She’s also available for foster-to-adopt in case you don’t want to make a lifelong commitment right now.
Batch Gastropub is the sponsor of our dog adoption section. If you adopt one of these guys (or any dog because of Miami Checklist), Batch will supply you with a gift card for the amount of the adoption from MDAS. So get a dog, get a burger…or something like that. Contact me for details.
Linda is one of hundreds of dogs available at Miami-Dade Animal Services. If you’re looking to bring a new best friend into the family, this is the place to start your search. Adoptions are only done in person, and you should bring a current picture ID and proof of current address. Dogs older than four months carry a $65 adoption fee and puppies are $85 — all dogs come home fully vaccinated, are dewormed, and have been spayed/neutered. In other words, adopting a dog is the best deal in Miami. Gorgeous!
Get Linda at Miami-Dade Animal Services. 3599 NW 79 Ave., Doral; 305-884-1101; miamidade.gov/animals
